Looking After Baby Teeth

Bring your baby to Wollaton Dental Care from about 18 months. Although when your child is too young to have a consultation bring them along with you to the practice. This just gets them used to the environment. When you bring you child to Wollaton Dental Care we ask you never to focus on pain People worry about coming to the dentist because what history & experience have told them If we educate our children that looking after your teeth & visiting the dentist is fun, that’s what they remember.
feeding

Babies aren’t born with a sweet tooth but if they are given sweet things they’ll soon learn to accept them.
Babies need healthy mouths to drink, eat, speak, cry & smile.

If you look after their mouths from birth it sets the pattern for Healthy Teeth For Life.

When you start to wean your baby

Remember:

  • Give them savoury foods
  • Encourage you child to drink water & milk rather than fizzy drinks.
  • Don’t be misled by some baby foods which contain sugar under other names such as sucrose, fructose, glucose & syrup.
  • Don’t be tempted to add sugar or honey to milk or other drinks.
  • Don’t put sugary drinks into feeding bottles, especially at bedtime. There is less saliva in the mouth at night & saliva acts as a buffer which helps to neutralise acids.
  • Don’t give baby a dummy dipped in honey, jam or anything sugary.
  • When it’s time to give your child snacks try to make them sugar free such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, natural yoghurts sweetened with fresh fruit, salads.
  • It is the frequency of sugar with which sweet foods are consumed that does the most damage - try to limit sweet foods to mealtimes. Sweets eaten all in one go will do much less damage than allowing your child to such a sweet every half hour.

Brushing
Start brushing your babies teeth as soon as they appear and make tooth brushing fun. Children’s tooth brushes are available from our reception area. Use a pea sized blob of children’s tooth paste. Your children really should be supervised whilst brushing their teeth to the age of 7.
