Fissure sealants are a coating which seals
the grooves & pits in the back teeth otherwise known as fissures.
This treatment may be carried out on healthy permanent back teeth.
The fissure sealant works by helping to stop decay in the groves
of the tooth.
Children eat many things that can encourage tooth
decay & are not always effective at brushing their teeth. Also
tooth brushing may not be enough, as toothbrush filaments are too
large to get into the fissures to clean thoroughly. Fissure sealing
penetrates the fissures thus preventing any food particles or germs
getting in. This smooth surface is much easier to clean.
when should fissure sealing be done?
When individual adult teeth begin to appear. Fissure
sealing may be carried out on adults as long as the permanent teeth
are free from fillings.
The fissure sealing procedure does not hurt at
all! A fissure sealant appointment usually takes 15 minutes depending
on how many teeth are being sealed. The appointment may be carried
out by the dentist or the hygienist.
The dentist cleans & prepares the tooth surface
to ensure the fissure seal adheres (sticks) to the tooth.
The sealant is applied, it takes about 20 seconds
to set.
The cost of helping your children keep their
teeth for life & reducing the amount of fillings in the future
is worth the few pounds the treatment costs. Speak to our dental
team for further details. Costs are in the region of £8-10
per tooth.
