Visiting the Hygienist

Dental hygienist are specially trained members of the dental team. They are trained to help prevent dental disease by giving advice on how to care for your teeth & gums, advising on diet. However, they spend a significant part of their time treating gum disease by removing calculus (tartar).
At Wollaton Dental Care our philosophy is to carry out preventive dentistry. Our hygienist enable our patients & dentists to follow this aim. Our hygienist help to keep our patients mouths clean & healthy. The dentists in the practice prefer to refer our patients to the hygienist as they are able to spend more time on the scaling & polishing of your teeth.

A TYPICAL HYGIENIST APPOINTMENT.
HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO SEE THE HYGIENIST?

A typical hygienist appointment will last 20 minutes. However if you have specific gum (perio) problems that need addressing you may need further visits.
The hygienist will scale & polish your teeth this procedure is painless. Some patients with gum disease may feel some discomfort, if you do please tell the hygienist who will be able to organise a form of pain control.

They may give advise or demonstrate flossing & brushing.

Diet advice may also be given.

The practice usually confirms hygienist appointments the day before.
80 % of the UK population have gum disease . In order to keep our patients with healthy smiles, we usually recommend that our patients visit the hygienist between three & six months, but this depends on our patients requirements. This means we can keep that smile looking clean, bright & fresh.
