Orthodontics is the name given to the type of
dental treatment which helps the jaw develop properly & the
teeth to grow straight. Orthodontics treatment is usually carried
out when :
The teeth are crooked or uneven
Their are spaces between the teeth
The jaw is too small to fit all the teeth in
The dentist will take impressions of your teeth
(moulds) in order to make models.
X-rays of your mouth will be taken to check the
position of the developing teeth.
A treatment plan will be decided & discussed
with you before the treatment continues.
Next, some teeth may have to be removed &
sometimes a brace is used to help straighten the teeth.
Their are 2 different types of braces which can
be used depending on the treatment required the simplest kind is
a removable brace which has special wires on a plastic plate to
fit around your teeth. Sometimes a fixed brace may be used as the
dentist may feel he will get a better result. This is where little
brackets are fitted onto the teeth with a wire pulling them together.
The treatment does tend to take about 2 years
so you must keep all your appointments and it is important to keep
your brace, teeth and gums very clean, otherwise you may end up
with straight & decayed teeth.
If you require more personal advice about having
orthodontic treatment please ask your dentist or any member of the
dental team to help you. The practice currently refers our patients
to an orthodontic specialist
