Mouth Ulcers
ABOUT ULCERS

Ulcers come in many forms: small, sometimes painful, sometimes not. Some ulcers are minor in nature but can indicate more severe problems.

ULCER CHECKLIST

Always consult your dentist about your ulcer if:

  • You are suffering from a fever at the same time.
  • If your ulcer does not show any signs of healing after two weeks.
  • If your ulcer is changing shape or getting bigger.

How to avoid the commonest ulcers

  • Avoid very hot food or liquids.
  • Don’t brush your gums too vigorously - discuss the right technique with your dentist or your dental hygienist.
  • Get rough teeth or fillings polished.
  • Be careful not to put tablets on your gums or cheeks unless your dentist tells you to.
  • Avoid smoking.

Simple ways to help your ulcer heal

  • Use an oral rinse, spray or oral gel - your dentist can advise which is suitable for you.
  • Avoid hot or spicy foods or liquids.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Keep your teeth clean - be careful with your brush in the area of your ulcer.
  • A healthy diet and regular fluid intake always helps with healing.
