White fillings & inlays are a new way of replace
the amalgam (silver coloured mercury) fillings. Cosmetically these
fillings are much better looking than silver fillings as they are
made to match the colour of your teeth. So when you smile you wont
see any of those unsightly amalgam fillings giving you a beautiful
natural looking smile. Also both filling materials are non toxic
they contain no mercury unlike the amalgam fillings.
your appointment
The length of the appointment will depend on a number of fillings
being treated & the size. The appointment is usually between
20-30 minutes.
The decay or old amalgam is removed, the hole
is shaped.
The hole is filled with a tooth coloured paste
or composite containing glass. The composite is moulded in the tooth
then set hard using an ultra violet light.
You can eat immediately on the tooth.
If looked after they can expect to last
between 2-10years. The only disadvantages with white fillings are
they can stain with age, they are less durable than amalgam &
can cause sensitivity.
White filling do cost more than amalgam fillings. Their natural
look & the confidence that they can give to patients makes the
cost relatively inexpensive. White fillings are not available on
the NHS in back teeth. cost
